“The Special One” at Mekong Market.

Mekong Market has been a staple in Mt. Baker for more than 30 years, providing Southeast Asian products to the communities living in Southeast Seattle since 1986. When Sriracha Sauce was in short supply, you bet you could find it at Mekong! Did you know that you can even order some from them via their listing on the ESES Website? It’s an especially great place to shop at this time of year – not only for their Lunar New Year promotions, but to learn about all the ways Southeast Asia celebrates the new year.

You’ve probably seen Mekong Market while driving down Rainier Avenue. Its hard to miss “The Special One” that takes center stage of the mural on the North facing wall. That mural was painted in 2023 by Artist Craig Cundiff as part of the Creative Connections program. (You can learn more about it in this Youtube video.)

The mural represents the Mekong River, which spans the countries of China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. It’s been a key trade route for thousands of years. That’s why Mekong Market is named after the Mekong River – the store sells products from the countries that surround the river!

The latter countries actually celebrate the Buddhist Theravāda New Year later this year in April, unlike the Chinese New Year being celebrated now. Mekong Market will also feature deals and promotions during that time, so make sure to check back then.

This year, Mekong is celebrating Lunar New Year with red lanterns on all their store aisles — a nod to the lantern ceremony that is a typical way of celebrating this time of year. Plus, they are currently running Lunar New Year promotions and every purchase of more than $39 gets a cool, limited-edition 2025 calendar. Wondering what deals they have going on for Lunar New Year?

  • Mei Hya Suab Rice Cakes $7.59 each
  • Imperial Palace Sesame Cookies $4.49 each
  • Enoki Mushrooms for $1.99 per bunch
  • $4.99 per pound of beef short ribs
