Thank you Pepsi, we appreciate your neighborliness and strong support of the Rainier Valley and the Hub Alliance effort!
We had our usual “First Saturday” litter collecting volunteers join the effort, some new to our neighborhood Mt. Baker residents, Franklin High School students, and the very supportive, regularly engaged, Pepsi Distributing employees. It is always a pleasure to see so many people engage to make the Rainier Valley shine and be litter free, for at least a little while.
This year, we had an especially large group of employees and their families from Pepsi participate. The Pepsi corporation encourages their employees to spend some time volunteering for the community, and Bridge-2-Beach is one of the main ways they engage. The Mt. Baker Hub Alliance delivers materials to their plant, gathered from the Seattle Adopt-A-Street program at the Rainier Chamber of Commerce. The Pepsi volunteers roam the streets surrounding the plant, moving north from Bayview Ave and MLK Jr. Way S. They are hard to miss wearing the bright red safety vests provided, and carrying the neon yellow litter bags and pickers. This year was their largest volunteer turn out yet, with between 15-20 employees and their family members. They collect over twenty bags of litter!
Our Vice President, Anne Miller, was located at Franklin High School, handing out materials for all our other volunteers. The Franklin students, Hub Alliance board members and their families, and our usual ‘First Saturday’ Clean Up volunteers met on the steps of Franklin HS in front of the key statues. There were lots of new faces, and we hope that some of them continue to do monthly clean ups with us the rest of the year.
In total, about 35 people volunteered and we collected upwards of 40 bags of litter, and returned 4 shopping carts to neighborhood stores. This was our highest attendance yet! We look forward to seeing you all again next year and at our monthly, ‘First Saturday’ clean ups, 9am-12pm, held rain or shine, in front of the waterox mural outside Hoa Mai Preschool. See you there!
